Welcome back to our newest comparison review! Today’s chosen jackets are by The North Face and Columbia, respectively the Carto Triclimate jacket and Bugaboo Interchange for men.
We selected these two particular jackets to compare, as they fall in the same category, that of being 3-in-1 jackets. What 3-in-1 refers to is a jacket that comes in layers, which can be removed or put together in order to make it adaptable to different weather conditions.
Both brands are previously featured in our selections and taking into account that both are quality brands and come with some of the best reviews and impressions by customers, this is bound to be an interesting comparison.
Another thing they have in common is that they are American brands, which is a first for our comparison reviews.
Let’s get started with their short introductions and move on right away to each jacket.
The North Face is probably one of the most renowned US brands when it comes to outdoors clothing. They are always coming up with new designs and their products are reliable and high quality.
Columbia is also a very reputable brand that has provided us with some of the best jackets that we have come across, be it in quality or performance. All of their designs are tried and tested in the harshest conditions in order to guarantee that only the best of the best make it into the stores.

Carto Triclimate is a jacket with a 100% Nylon shell and 100% Polyester lining. It comes in two layers, the outer one being completely waterproof and the inner being well-insulated.
We’ll start with the shell, which is not only waterproof but also breathable, a rare feature in waterproof jackets. All of its seams are sealed in order to prevent any water from getting through.
It comes with an adjustable and removable hood, as well as a high collar that closes up by the main zipper, which comes with a storm placket to further protect it. The sleeve cuffs are adjustable with Velcro fasteners and it is a shell suitable for wet weather and mild temperatures.
The inner jacket is made of HyVent technology that makes it highly breathable, while also padded with 100g Heatseeker insulation. It is a hoodless jacket, with outer and inner pockets, just like the outer one, and it comes with elasticized sleeve cuffs.
It is suitable for late autumn and early winter when worn alone, but it becomes an excellent winter jacket when both layers are worn together.
Here is a video presentation of the HyVent technology:

The second jacket is Bugaboo by Columbia. It comes with a 100% Nylon plain weave outer shell, which is highly breathable, as well as fully water and windproof. It has a detachable hood, as well as a high collar.
There are two side pockets and two chest pockets on this jacket, which also has adjustable sleeve cuffs. The main zipper is water-resistant and covered by a storm placket for added protection.
The inner jacket is made of 100% Polyester Dotswarm fleece, which comes with the Omni-Tech and Omni-heat technology.
Fleece is quite insulated on its own, but both those technology fabrics further insulate the jacket and provide incredible warmth due to the silver particles embedded into the fabric. They help reflect body heat better, therefore maintaining it for longer.
This is a hoodless jacket, with two side pockets for keeping the hands warm.

Appearance and Wear
When it comes to comparing how these jackets look, there isn’t much to say as they don’t differ a lot from each other.
Apart from the color selection, where Columbia’s Bugaboo has the upper hand, these jackets look a bit similar, the only difference being the chest pocket on Carto Triclimate. They both have detachable hoods, Velcro-adjustable sleeve cuffs and are the same length.
As for wear, it depends on which way the jacket is worn.
If the inner jacket is included, then Bugaboo is softer and plushier due to the fleece. The outer shells perform similarly and overall Carto Triclimate is a bit bulkier, which might get in the way for certain sports, such as skiing.

Warmth and Performance
Bugaboo comes with reflective Omni-Heat technology, whereas Carto Triclimate is insulated with Heatseeker padding that is ranked as one of the best synthetic insulators and The North Face commonly uses it in their jackets.
They provide similar levels of warmth, but Carto Triclimate is better suited for harsh weather, overall. As for breathability and being windproof, once again they are tied as they both deliver what they promise in this regard.
Weather Resistance and Durability
Weather conditions alone, there isn’t much that sets them apart here as both are waterproof and windproof. They have been tried and tested and managed to remain completely dry in both snow and rain without any issues at all.
As for durability, The North Face‘s jackets in general are made of higher quality materials as compared to some other brands, therefore they are bound to last longer.
However, Bugaboo is one of Columbia‘s earlier launches and loyal customers that have worn this jacket for over a decade keep coming back to it.
That means that depending on what you will be using the jackets for, there isn’t much difference in their durability and longevity.
Conclusion
If you want a jacket that is reliable in both good and harsh weather, especially if the temperatures will easily go under 0°C, then Carto Triclimate will make sure that you remain warm, dry and safe.
Bugaboo, on the other hand, provides great weather protection and is leaner in design, making it a great insulating jacket for outdoor activities.
It all comes down to what exactly you are looking for and seeing that these jackets perform similarly, it’s up to you to decide.
