2. How To Pack a Packable Down Jacket

We took a look at some great down jackets in this selection, but not everyone knows how to choose a good down jacket and how to actually pack a packable one.

We are always here to help so keep on reading and in no time you will be able to confidently shop for a down jacket and take good care of it, too.

First things first, make sure that your down jacket is packable, otherwise you might cause damage to the fabric and disrupt the down filling. Typically, packable jackets, regardless of whether they are insulated with down feathers or not, are labeled as packable.

A clear indicator is the pouch. If there’s a pouch or bag that it comes with, then it’s most definitely a packable jacket.

But nowadays it’s rare that you will come across a packable jacket that isn’t labeled as such, especially those that pack in one of their own pockets. In this segment we will look at the two types of packing you can use.

Jackets That Pack Into a Bag or Pouch

Let’s firstly look at the one that’s simpler, the down jacket that packs in a bag. We have also attached a video to make the explanation easier.

  • The first step is to lay the jacket flat and zip up all the zippers (main one, pockets).
  • Fold each side this way: Shoulder to collar and lay the sleeve over the folded side.
  • After having created a long rectangle, grab the side closest to you and roll it tight.
  • Continue rolling the jacket until you reach the end, forming a tube-like shape. Remember to keep the folding tight, so the jacket compresses enough to fit into the pouch.

Jackets That Pack Into One of the Pockets

The second option is quite practical, especially if you are not a fan of carrying extra items with you. The first thing to do is unzipping the pocket, usually the left one. Keep in mind that it is an outer pocket.

  • Turn the pocket you are using for packing inside out.
  • Start stowing the jacket into the pocket slowly, making sure you are not being too rough or damaging the fabric. Don’t worry, it will all fit into the pocket so keep at it.
  • Lastly, after the entire jacket is into the pocket, use the zipper to close your “pouch” and you are done.

3. How To Choose a Packable Down Jacket

Now, let’s talk what to look for in a down jacket that will not only keep you warm and cozy, but is also packable and practical.

Warmth and Down Fill Power

Insulation is the reason why down jackets are so preferred during winter. You will often come across fill power of down and to put it simply, it means that the lighter the jacket, the higher should the fill power be in order to provide the best insulation.

Down vs. Synthetic Insulation

We have mentioned in several of our previous articles the differences in these two types of insulation. Briefly, what you should know is that when it comes to warmth, down is unrivaled.

The key difference is when the insulation is wet. Synthetic filling does not lose its loft when wet, so it still manages to provide insulation and warmth, unlike down. That’s why, when you are looking for a down jacket, make sure that it at least is water-resistant.

Now, on to the matter at hand, packable padded jackets. There is a big difference here. Down jackets pack much easily and compress better than a synthetic one, while also being a lot lighter in weight, so if you need to save space while travelling, then you know which one to go for.

Further reading: Down vs Synthetic Jacket: What’s the Difference? Which Insulation is Better?

Durability

This is for both the fabric’s resistance to wear and tear and also preventing down loss. Usually, the best option is to go for down jackets with thicker shells, which make wear and tear less of an issue and fare better against the elements, too.

There are also Ripstop fabrics, which are incredibly durable, but the downside is that they tend to trap in moisture, which becomes an issue for down.

As for retaining down, the jacket needs to either have a down bag or to have been treated with a down-proof coating. Ideally it would be both, but packable down jackets, which tend to be thinner and lighter, should be down-proof coated, so make sure that is the case.

Find The Proper Fit

This is also a previously mentioned key step in purchasing a quality jacket. It is especially important with down, since it will be worn in freezing weather and you don’t want to take any chances in that case.

Make sure the jacket fits well, with enough space for light layering underneath. A jacket that fits too loose will let the cold in, defeating the purpose of its insulation, whereas a tight one will fit uncomfortably and should you need to layer, it might not fit at all.

With that we conclude today’s selection and guide on choosing and packing a packable down jacket. We hope you liked it! If you have any question or suggestion leave a comment below.
