How To Clean A Canada Goose Jacket - A Useful GuidePin

With summer officially here, you’d think us crazy for continuing to discuss jackets at a time like this, let alone parkas and down jackets.

Well, we understand that, but what’s the harm in being prepared beforehand for the harsh season of winter?

When buying a winter jacket, like everyone else, we too weigh the pros and cons of each jacket and price, of course, is one of the most important factors to take into consideration. And just like everyone else, the thought of how a particular jacket is going to be maintained and cleaned does not really cross our minds.

After all, if it is the right price and fulfills the requirements, that’s all that matters at that moment.

While this is not a big issue with most jackets, when it comes to some jackets in particular, it can easily become a turning point. Take for example down jackets. They are notorious for being very bothersome to maintain and wash.

So much so, in fact, that many people opt for dry cleaning services, just so they will not have to deal with the trouble of washing a down jacket, and that is completely understandable.

In previous articles, we have compiled several guides on washing and maintaining particular jackets in their best conditions and today we will be doing the same, as you have already seen in the title. We will be taking a look at how to best care for and clean a Canada Goose jacket.

This is important, as a matter of fact, because not only will you be dealing with goose down if you own or will own a Canada Goose jacket, but there is also real fur involved. And to top it all off, these jackets are very expensive, which only adds to the list, frankly.

In today’s guide you will learn all the tips and steps you should know in order to help your Canada Goose jacket last for decades, as it is supposed to.

* Note: this guide is for informational purposes, we are not responsible for any damage you might cause to your jacket. So, proceed at your own risk and before proceeding please read the jacket’s warranty rules.

1. The Type Of Jacket

Before we get any further with the details of cleaning jackets, the first step is to categorize the jackets that we will be looking at.

Obviously, not all jackets are made the same, not even those that belong in the same category, so this is a very important step.

In this tutorial we will look at Parkas, Light jackets and Rain jackets. These are three very different types of jackets, each with their particular features and cleaning requirements, as you will see.

2. Parkas and Down Jackets

Warning: As per Canada Goose‘s Warranty rules, machine-washing one of their parka or down-insulated jacket voids the warranty. They recommend that you take it to a dry cleaner when the time comes, so proceed at your own risk.

With that being said, if you do decide to get the job done yourself, there are some proper steps that you can follow, which apply to down jackets in general.

Most of Canada Goose‘s down jackets and parkas come with real coyote fur trim on the hood, which we will look at separately.

Before Cleaning

As with all jackets, there are a few preparations you need to make so that the result of your at-home cleaning will be the best possible.

First things first, empty all of your pockets and remove the fur trim and put it somewhere safe if it does not require cleaning. If it does, then continue reading.

Then, zip up the main zipper and all the other zippers on the pockets. This will prevent the fabric from getting caught into them and ripping.

The best way to wash a down jacket is by turning it inside-out after all the zippers are up. That way it will get fully cleaned on the inside and through the down insulation.

Because most of Canada Goose’s down jackets are either made of special membranes and fabric technologies, or have been treated with DWR finish, by cleaning them inside-out you bypass the water-repellent coating, which would not allow for a thorough clean otherwise.

The Cleaning Method

Here there are also a few things to consider. If the jacket simply has one (or two) dirty spots, then spot cleaning is the best bet. To be as safe as possible, use a down-safe detergent as it won’t damage the feathers or the shell.

But if it needs a more thorough cleaning, then you can either do so by hand, soaking the jacket in cold water and down detergent or by using a washing machine.

Washing machines will make the whole process a lot easier, but they are also trickier, too. The type of washing machine is of key importance, because a top-loading one is not suitable for cleaning down jackets.

Due to the agitator and the moving of the jacket around it, you run the risk of the jacket being damaged both on the outside and also damaging the down insulation.

To avoid that, a front-loading washing machine on a gentle cycle and cool water temperature will do the job.

As a matter of precaution, you should run a quick cycle on an empty machine, in the highest water temperature setting. This will remove all the gunk and residue from previous detergents, giving your down jacket the best chance at making it through this process without any issues.

The water temperature, as we mentioned, should be on the low side so as to maintain the feathers and also not affect any coating or sealed seams.

Drying The Jacket

Success! Your jacket is now squeaky clean and it is time to dry it. Because Canada Goose jackets need extra care, air-drying is off the table.

A tumble dryer is the best method and as we have mentioned in our previous down-washing guide, throw a couple of clean tennis balls in with the jacket.

By moving around, the balls will help break up any clumps of feathers and ensure that everything will dry thoroughly. It is especially important to make sure that your down jacket is fully dry because otherwise the down will start to smell and might even develop mold due to the humidity.

Storing a Canada Goose Down Jacket

So now your jacket is clean and fully dry, it is time to put it away until winter comes around. The best thing to do is place the jacket into a jacket or suit bag, which will allow air flow and store it into a dry place, with no chance of humidity.

This way you will be helping your jacket to last a long time and the down will not get damaged or lose its insulating ability.

3. Light Jackets

What do we mean by light jackets? Well, soft shells, hard shells and any jacket in between a heavy winter coat and a light raincoat.

These jackets are usually water-resistant or fully waterproof and simply by following the label instructions you can machine-wash them at home without any problems.

Also, the warranty will not be voided for these types of jackets, so wash away.

Before Washing

Zippers up and turn it inside-out once again, but only after you have brushed off the dirt on the outside of the shell.

The Cleaning Method

As we said, you can easily wash these jackets in a washing machine, and preferably opt for a front-loading one. The detergent used should be very mild so as not to damage the fabric and any specific sealant used on the seams or coating.

The water temperature should be cold and you should stay away from bleaching agents and harsh chemicals. If a stain is hard to remove, try a spot treatment first and if that doesn’t do the job, it’s time to take the jacket to the dry cleaner.

Drying The Jacket

Unlike a down jacket, shells and light jackets should not be tumble dried. The best method here is by hanging them to air dry and if necessary, ironing them afterwards on the coolest setting.

4. Rain Jackets

Rain jackets are also known as waterproof jackets. They are typically made of a special membrane which binds to the inner lining, so as to allow for breathability and water-repellency.

Before Washing

Brush dirt off the jacket, do all the zippers up and turn it inside-out, you know the routine by now. As with the previous jackets, do a cleaning cycle on an empty washing machine to remove build up from previous detergent and then you are good to go.

The Cleaning Method

Waterproof jackets are fairly easy to wash. Usually at a 30°C temperature and with a mild, non-biological soap, you can get the job done in no time.

Drying The Jacket

Tumble drying is advisable every so often, but air-drying is the preferred method if you will be frequently washing the jacket. Do not iron a waterproof jacket because there is a high chance of the DWR treatment being damaged.

Waterproofing a Canada Goose Jacket

There is an extra step for waterproof jacket, and that is waterproofing it when it starts to absorb water, rather than repelling it. This is done with several DWR products, but those in liquid form that are used on a clean product are the best ones.

For this, you simply need to put the clean jacket in the washing machine and then use the recommended amount (each product has its own instructions) and run it through a synthetic cycle in low temperature.

Then you have to use a tumble dryer to fully activate the DWR treatment, just make sure that it is on a low-heat setting.

5. Cleaning Canada Goose Coyote Fur

Real fur, despite all of its perks, is a bit bothersome to look after. You have to be careful not to get it wet and if you do, not to get it too wet, otherwise a trip to a specialist fur-cleaner is in order.

For at-home maintenance, make sure that the fur is free of debris and dirt by shaking it lightly, you can even use a soft brush to help the hairs get cleaner, but only if it is dry.

If it is a little wet then hang it to dry in a well-ventilated area. Stay away from hair or clothes dryers as they will damage the fur.

For storing, just like a down jacket, avoid humid places and store it with your Canada Goose down parka that it comes with, in a breathable bag.

And there you have it! Now you know all the steps to clean any Canada Goose jacket in the comfort of your own home.
