1. Canada Goose
A short history of the brand
Founded by Sam Tick in Toronto, Canada in 1957, Canada Goose was initially named Metro Sportswear Ltd. Once they entered the European market during the 1970s (after their first ever down jacket was launched), they switched their name to Canada Goose.
This is among the most popular brands and it is known mainly for its down jackets, especially its parkas. These jackets are the warmest ones you can find, which makes them immensely popular among those living in colder areas with long and freezing winters.
But Canada Goose jackets are not just warm, they are also stylish, very well-made and can last for decades with regular maintenance.
However, along with these qualities comes a very expensive price, which these jackets don’t seem to mind as they are very popular despite not being affordable for everyone.
If you want to learn more about why this brand is so expensive yet so popular and if it’s really worth it, take a look at our other article here.
Materials and Manufacture
They use mostly goose down for their down-insulated jackets, and duck down for a few jackets as well. According to the Responsible Down Standard, they are sourced responsibly and are traceable. Moreover, the birds are not live plucked and are treated humanely.

Other animal-based natural materials utilized by this brand are coyote fur and merino wool; these are also responsibly sourced.
However, Canada Goose has reduced the amount of coyote fur in their recent products because of the controversies, even though they attain coyote fur from places where the animal is regarded as pest.
Canada Goose has an extensive manufacturing process, which includes 13 steps in which even the tiniest details are properly examined to ensure optimal quality of the finished results.
As usual, in this paragraph we choose one or two similar products from each brand and compare them to each other. This time, from Canada Goose, we have selected the Montebello parka for women.
Canada Goose Women’s Montebello Parka
This stylish parka is created with 15% cotton and 85% Polyester Arctic Tech. It includes white duck down insulation of 625 fill power.
The parka has an adjustable hood with removable coyote fur trim. The hood is over-extended and oversized, which offers enhanced protection during cold winds and blizzards. It comes with various inner and outer pockets, which are very practical for everyday usage.
The temperature rating is -10°C / -20°C, placing the jacket in the “Fundamental” category of the Thermal Experience Index (TEI) developed by Canada Goose.
The jackets by Canada Goose are among the most popular and high quality ones available in the market. While they are incredibly durable, they are not very affordable, as we mentioned above. The price of many of their jackets goes well above $600.
Keep in mind that these are luxury jackets, which need your serious consideration before you make a purchasing decision.
Are these jackets worth the price?
When you consider the quality and durability of these jackets, then they are certainly worth the price. Once you buy one of these jackets, rest assured you can use it for decades.
These are perfect if you live in very cold areas, but if not, then we think maybe you should consider more affordable options.
A short history of the brand
Patagonia was part of the brand Chouinard Equipment from California. After this brand split and created two new brands, one of these two was Patagonia which was established in 1973 and was a clothing brand since it first started out.
The majority of online reviews rave about these products being high in performance and quality. Patagonia products are most popular among customers looking for the right clothing for outdoor activities.
Another significant factor that makes this brand loved by many is the continuous efforts Patagonia is making to decrease the environmental impact of their manufacturing process.
All the materials they use for their products are sourced ethically to make the brand as environmentally-friendly as possible.
Materials and Manufacture
The majority of the materials used in Patagonia’s products are recycled. The materials which need direct sourcing are sourced responsibly and ethically from animals that are humanely treated, as well as sourced from suppliers that utilize sustainable measures.
The jackets by this brand utilize the breathable and waterproof fabric technology that you probably are familiar with, Gore-Tex.

Also, Patagonia utilizes the H2No fabric technology for some of their products as well, which is developed by the brand itself. It makes the product comfortable to wear offering next-to-skin comfort.
DWR treatment is utilized by this technology, which assists in repelling water and in this case Patagonia uses the Deluge® DWR coating.
Deluge® DWR coating lasts longer than other DWR coatings, thus requiring less applications.
If you want to learn more, we have compared the H2No technology to Gore-Tex here.
The manufacturing process of this brand focuses on high quality and optimal finishing, which is evident in their products.
Patagonia’s manufacturing process also includes the 24 Killer Wash testing process where the fabrics are placed under harsh simulations to assess their durability and water-resistance.

Now let’s see a popular jacket by Patagonia, just like we did for Canada Goose above. We have picked the Prairie Dawn parka for women.
Patagonia Women’s Prairie Dawn Parka
The outer material of this parka is made of 100% cotton while the lining is recycled polyester fleece, and the insulation is made of 100% Thermogreen™ polyester.
It comes with a front closure with a wind flap and zipper, and a hood. This parka jacket is mid-length and has two side pockets and two front pockets.
The material is durable, insulating, wind resistant, and breathable, making it not only comfortable to wear but also weather resistant.
While Patagonia provides a variety of options when it comes to price, this brand is not very affordable overall. However, it includes more affordable options in its product range than other expensive outdoor clothing brands, like for example Canada Goose, or Moncler, which are more on the luxury side.
Are these jackets worth the price?
If you want to buy a jacket that will last for a few seasons so you won’t have to purchase a new one each year, then these jackets are absolutely worth the price.

3. Which Brand is Better?
If you live in an extremely cold but dry place, then without a doubt, you won’t find a better option than the parka jackets by Canada Goose, as they can withstand harsh, freezing weather.
However, when it comes to Patagonia, you can get more design styles and waterproof materials.
So, which one is better?
Canada Goose jackets are perfect for harsh weather and will last for decades. Patagonia jackets offer water-resistant products and more technical outdoor clothing, which also come with a guarantee to last for a long time.
Both these brands offer very high quality products, which means the deciding factor will depend on your preference, the weather where you’re going to use their products and the outdoor activity you’re going to do.
Are you going to stay out in the snow for hours? Then choose Canada Goose. Or are you going in a camping adventure in Spring, when it’s not very cold but it rains from time to time? In this case you can choose a Patagonia jacket.
The price can be a major deciding factor as well. While both brands are expensive, Patagonia is a more affordable option compared to Canada Goose.
